11-year-old girl killed by gunshots in Merksem: ‘Another settling of accounts in the drug world’, according to Bart De Wever
Two other people who were on the spot were also injured, but their life would not be in danger.
The street was closed after the incident. The forensic laboratory and a ballistics expert went on site to make the usual findings. A judicial inquiry will also be opened to establish whether this event is linked to the world of drugs, like several other similar attacks on houses in Antwerp.
This is surely the case, according to the mayor of Antwerp. “The family concerned is known, there have already been incidents before. This seems to be yet another settling of scores in the middle. A drug war is underway. DCriminals attack the houses of other criminals. We have been witnessing this for months now. What I feared for a long time happened: there was an innocent victim, a child.”
“It’s terribly painful“, said the burgomaster again. “This can only be an incentive to join Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open Vld) and Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) to multiply the necessary efforts at national and international level to contain the mafia drug. […] The national anti-drug plan that is being prepared frankly disappoints me, but we will continue these discussions with the government.“
Minister Verlinden reacted via Twitter. She talks about “a terrible tragedy in which an innocent child died“.”The investigation is ongoing, but we will do everything we can to catch these ruthless criminals. Children have nothing to do with any drug war.”
