An 11-month-old baby was diagnosed with a serious case of the flu on Wednesday, as the Health Ministry warned of a rise in hospitalizations from the contagious disease and urged the public to get vaccinated.

The baby was admitted to the children’s emergency department at Meir Hospital, Kfar Saba, in serious condition after suffering uncontrollable convulsions and difficulty breathing. He tested positive for the influenza A virus, the hospital said.

“This is the second child who has recently presented to the children’s emergency department with neurological complications due to influenza A. It is recommended to avoid influenza and its complications by vaccinating babies and children” , the hospital said, also referring to a case of the flu in a 13-year-old boy last month.

Separately, the Health Ministry said on Thursday that 340 patients were hospitalized with confirmed cases of the flu between October and last Saturday, including 116 who were admitted in the past week, representing a 30% increase. compared to the previous week.

The ministry urged the public, especially those aged 65 and over, to get the flu shot, stressing that it can prevent the spread of the disease.

So far this year, 13.2 percent of policyholders in Israel have received the flu shot, including 49.8 percent of those aged 65 and older, the ministry said.
