A train derails between Liège and Bressoux
A freight train, which came from Zeebrugge and was heading for Germany, derailed on line 40 Liège-Visé, near Bressoux, the rail network manager Infrabel said on Monday morning. “We still do not know the circumstances of the incident. An investigation is underway,” said Infrabel.
The seventh wagon of the train, which had 20, derailed from four axles in the Froidmont tunnel and continued its course for two kilometers before coming to a stop near Bressoux station.
The Infrabel recovery train was dispatched to the site to put the damaged train back on the tracks and thus allow its evacuation. The operation should take all day, also specified the manager of the rail network.
Extensive damage was caused to the railway infrastructure. The railway logs were damaged over a length of two kilometers and four switches will have to be replaced. Repair work on the sleepers will begin Tuesday morning and will continue for a week.
Due to the incident, rail traffic is slowed down. Train traffic runs on a single track between Liège and Bressoux, at a speed of 40 km/h.
