“About fifty firefighters are on site but there are no injuries” (video)
A major fire is underway in the center of Malmedy, this Wednesday at the end of the afternoon. Three terraced houses in rue La Vaulx are engulfed in flames, indicates the rescue zone 5, Warche Amblève Lienne.
It was a pellet stove that caused the blaze, which quickly spread to the two neighboring houses. Three houses are currently engulfed in flames.
A thick column of smoke is visible several hundred meters away.
The means deployed are impressive. The firefighters of the Warche Amblève Lienne zone received the support of their colleagues from the VHP zone who came as reinforcements. In total, about fifty firefighters fought against the flames. On site, there are four pumpers, four tanks, three officers, a drone and two self-ladders.
To avoid any risk, a large part of the district has been evacuated and traffic is no longer possible in the center of Malmedy.
If no injuries are to be deplored, the material damage will be irreparably important in view of the materials used for the construction of these old houses.
Several members of the municipal college are on site. “The fire is under control but not yet contained. We are busy relocating families,” explains Mayor Jean-Paul Bastin.
