Alain Mathot’s new life as a real estate consultant

By Xavier Counasse
After leaving the political scene by giving up the mayoral sash of Seraing (December 2018) then his mandate as federal deputy (May 2019), Alain Mathot (ex-PS) did not have time to get bored. He directly converted into real estate, invoicing 25,000 euros gross per month to his only client: Erik van der Paal. Lobbyist and developer of real estate projects in Antwerp, Van der Paal is described as close to the N-VA. It was he who led the company Land Invest Group (LIG) at the time when it was investing alongside the Liège pension fund Ogeo.
“Alain’s first invoice dates from May 7, 2019, and we ended our collaboration on September 1, 2022”, confirms Mr. Van der Paal to our colleagues from VIVID. At this price, Alain Mathot therefore earned 300,000 euros gross per year. In total, he billed in three years and five months just over one million euros. Until January 2020, it was through his company Almaure that Alain Mathot was paid. Then (February 4, 2020), the Sérésien set up a new company, called Consultam, which took over for monthly invoicing.
According to Erik Van der Paal, Alain Mathot – definitively sentenced for corruption in the Intradel file in March 2022 – worked on a hotel project on the Costa del Sol. “The Marbella hotel, we didn’t make it a reality… But Alain did his job well, I have nothing to reproach him for. He has contacts in Marbella with people I don’t know well. He sent me a file which was very interesting but, at that time, it was the covid and we did not follow up ”. Erik Van der Paal mentions three other files in which Alain Mathot was involved: a project of “60 apartments in Namur” (awaiting a permit), a project of “300 apartments in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert” (awaiting a permit) , and a project for a “gas-fired power plant in Tunisia with Walloon industrialists active in energy” (in progress).
Alain Mathot did not respond to requests from the Evening, nor to those of VIVID.
