An emergency doctor asks an asylum seeker for 2,000 euros to give birth: “It’s the first time I’ve heard of such a case”
A woman had a terrible experience in a Brussels hospital. A lady, a Mauritanian asylum seeker and pregnant, presented herself to the hospital in Jette, because her water had just broken.
Victim of strong contractions, she feels that childbirth is about to happen. However, not housed by Fedasil at the time, she cannot present medical coverage. Thus, an emergency worker refuses to take care of her, unless he gives her 2,000 euros in cash.
The lady, unable to pay this amount, therefore left the hospital and joined the Brugmann establishment, which welcomed her without posing any problems. The UZ Jette worker was summoned and then sanctioned by his management, but according to our information, he is currently still on the job.
In her home country, the lady was a tour guide. She settled in Belgium with her family.to pay prevent her two-year-old daughter from being circumcised in Mauritania”.
“It’s the first time I’ve heard of such a case, but from what I hear, it’s true that asylum seekers who should normally be taken care of by Fedasil often find themselves in “clog” the emergency services of the various Brussels hospitals”, notes David Vogel, Advocacy Officer at Médecins Sans Frontières.
