Belgians’ pension savings shrunk by 4 billion euros in 2022
This is the worst performance since the 2008 financial crisis.

Lhe 1.8 million Belgians who build up a nest egg with a pension savings fund saw their savings drop sharply in 2022. Tax-advantaged pension savings funds recorded an average return of -16% in 2022, according to the calculations of
Litter
and
Time
released on Friday and based on figures from data provider Infront.
While pension savings funds managed some 25.5 billion euros at the end of 2021, more than 4 billion euros evaporated last year. The average saver lost 2,312 euros. Pension savings funds had a very bad year due to the fall in stocks and bonds. It is very rare that both asset classes suffer heavy losses at the same time.

But this loss can be made up for in the years to come. People who retire are not obliged to close their pension savings immediately. They can wait for better times.
