Choker or electric collars, round aquariums: these animal accessories are now prohibited in Wallonia
The Walloon government adopted, at the end of last week, a decree aimed at prohibiting or limiting the use of accessories causing suffering to animals. This is particularly the case for choke or electric collars as well as certain aquariums for fish.
According to Amandine Jadoul, coordinator of the SPA of La Louvière, the choke collar “compresses the neck and trachea. The animal therefore has difficulty breathing. He obeys because he suffers.“The electric collar is no better, according to SPA officials.”Very badly used, it can have serious consequences“, explains Gaëtan Sgualdino, director of the SPA of La Louvière. “The dog will not understand why you are hurting him. Eventually, he will develop more dangerousness and reactivity, which is dangerous for his master.
If your dog pulls on a leash, the SPA advises using a harness, and positive incentives, ie rewards.
The measures come into force in the spring
This text is based on several opinions from the Walloon Animal Welfare Council, and was the subject of consultation with veterinarians and the animal protection sector. Concretely, the ban concerns electric collars, choke collars; spike collars; spherical aquariums and aquariums with a capacity of less than 10 litres. However, the decree provides for certain derogations, in particular for dogs of Civil Security, Federal and Local Police, Defense and Customs. As for the use of the choke collar, an exemption may be granted for individuals on the basis of a veterinary certificate.
A one-year transition phase is planned for the use of choke collars and electric collars in kennel clubs and for dog handlers, as well as for electric collars combined with an underground fence. “Until today, the use of certain accessories, such as electric collars, was not only authorized but trivialized. However, it is scientifically proven that their use generates very real pain and lesions on animals. It was therefore necessary to better regulate these devices, especially since effective and painless alternatives exist in terms of animal education.“, commented the Walloon Minister in charge of Animal Welfare, Céline Tellier.
