Lhe Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella, expelled on Wednesday from the PS and his political group (the S&D) in the European Parliament, wrote Thursday to the committee which will have to examine the request for the lifting of his parliamentary immunity. The Socialist MEP reiterates his regret that the presumption of innocence is not respected, and his desire to defend himself, but in court.

The MEP will therefore not go to explain himself to the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee (JURI), which should begin its examination of the requests for the waiver of parliamentary immunity transmitted by the Belgian courts within the framework of the ” Qatargate”. These requests target Marc Tarabella and another deputy from the center left group, the Italian Andrea Cozzolino.

Marc Tarabella quickly let it be known that he was in favor of lifting his immunity, and that he wanted to be heard quickly by the investigators. “Although fully aware of the possible consequences of this lifting of immunity, I am in favor of it myself: I want to fight,” he wrote to members of the JURI committee on Thursday. His letter, sent to the Belga agency by a parliamentary source, confirms that the Belgian will not make use of his right to be heard by the members of the commission. “I will not speak to the press or to anyone before having spoken to the judicial authorities who alone are able to guarantee a quality investigation and a fair procedure”.

Like several other players in this case, the MEP regrets the leaks to the press. This week, one of the documents transmitted by the Belgian justice to the Parliament to explain the reasons for the request for waiver of immunity, a document supposed to remain strictly confidential, reached certain editors. It included accusations made against the MEP by Pier Antonio Panzeri, one of the defendants who obtained the status of repentant.

“Since the start of this affair, the leaks have unfortunately been regular, almost systematic; the secrecy of the instruction is no longer secret and the presumption of innocence is no more than a vague concept totally flouted, ”wrote the socialist on Thursday.

“I am judged by public opinion or by some of my colleagues on the basis of press articles or self-serving confessions of incarcerated people, confessions which have apparently changed over time contrary to my position”, he writes again. .
