Othman EB, the uncle of the child shot dead in Merksem on Monday evening, told the newspaper on Tuesday Antwerp Gazette that his family will respond to the tragedy without resorting to violence. “We will search for the perpetrators with the police and the justice system,” said the 30-something wanted for drug trafficking, supposedly from Dubai.

The mayor of Antwerp Bart De Wever (N-VA) said on Monday evening that the family targeted by the attack is known in the drug scene and that the incident must be considered in this context. He said he feared reprisals.

No contact with the “underworld”

“There will certainly be a reaction”, delivered Othman EB to the Antwerp Gazette. “But not as the mayor imagines. History has already shown us countless examples of Avengers and it never ended well for them. The victim’s uncle further denies having any connection with the “underworld” or violence.

Othman EB has never been convicted in Belgium for drug trafficking, unlike his younger brother Younes, who is also wanted by the judicial authorities. He believes that the perpetrators of attacks like the one on Monday should be punished more severely. “People who commit attacks are sentenced to three-year suspended sentences,” he laments.
