Dozens of Russian artists placed on Ukraine sanctions list | War in Ukraine

Ukraine has placed dozens of Russian artists and other public figures on a sanctions list, including big names in cinema as well as pop and opera scenes.

Among the best-known people targeted by the decree issued by Ukraine’s presidential office on Saturday is Vienna-based opera singer Anna Netrebko. She is seen as too close to the Kremlin and not critical enough of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The singer, but still 118 other people, including also 3 Ukrainian nationals, will see their assets frozen. The sanctions list also includes Russian pop star Philipp Kirkorov, as well as actor and director Nikita Mikhalkov, who won awards at film festivals including Cannes and Venice.

Ukrainian media are also reporting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revoked the citizenship of 13 members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church clergy in late December. To date, neither the identity nor the number of these revocations were known.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is traditionally close to Russia and only really broke away from the republic after the Russian invasion last February. kyiv perceives the ties between the Church and Moscow as a threat to the country’s security.
