Dince 2010, Belgium has acted as a pioneer: a European driving licence, in bank card format, has been introduced on a trial basis. Since 2013, these driving licenses have been deployed everywhere.

The main difference with the old (paper) version? The new license must be changed every ten years. But… the Belgians did not receive, until now, a warning to do so, contrary to the identity card. “It is and remains the responsibility of each driver to have a valid driving license”, answers the office of Georges Gilkinet, Federal Minister for Mobility, questioned by the Newsletter.

The first new generation driving licenses are therefore more than ten years old, without everyone being aware that a renewal is necessary. Some drive with an expired card and risk a fine of up to 16,000 euros, as well as a license withdrawal of up to 5 years. To solve this problem, a private company has been commissioned by the Minister and the FPS Mobility to send warnings.

This year, 426,341 driving licenses have to be renewed. They will be 488,319 next year, according to figures from the Log.
