Fear of a halt in air traffic: Brussels Airport is sounding the alarm

Dut this summer, Brussels Airport must apply for a new environmental permit. Without it, air traffic is impossible. But the permit is threatened because the Flemish government still does not have an agreement on nitrogen. Zuhal Demir, Flemish Minister for the Environment, and the airport itself are sounding the alarm, but the Open VLD and the CD&V see it as a political strategy, write the newspapers of the Mediahuis group on Wednesday.
The current environmental permit dates from 2004 and expires in July 2024. By this summer, Zaventem must apply for a new permit. And before that, Brussels Airport is waiting for clarification on how much nitrogen it is allowed to emit. “Like any industry, we need a regulatory framework for nitrogen. That is why it is important that a legally secure decree be voted on in the short term at Flemish level, ”says the airport.
The first nitrogen agreement from last February has still not been voted on in Parliament. The CD&V wants to withdraw some of the measures provided for in the agreement, to the great frustration of its coalition partner, the N-VA.
Ms. Demir and the airport are therefore increasing the pressure for a quick agreement, fearing a stoppage of air traffic. For CD&V and Open VLD, this is a political strategy, and the rejection of the agreement does not prevent the granting of a permit to Zaventem.
