Here’s why it’s better not to rush into choosing a fixed energy contract
Energy providers have not offered fixed contracts for months because they are too expensive in these volatile markets. But Luminus is the first to offer new contracts again.
An analysis of the new Luminus rate cards by Test Achats shows that for electricity, fixed prices per kWh have increased by 13 to 19% compared to January 2022, according to the consumer organization. For gas, we observe rather a stagnation, even a decrease compared to January 2022.
Context of falling prices
Test Achats welcomes the return of Luminus to fixed contracts, but at the same time warns against the temptation to rush into such a contract: “Given the current context of falling energy prices, we do not recommend rushing into fixed Luminus contracts”. The consumer organization advises to be patient and to wait for the prices of other providers to be published as well.
The Flemish energy regulator, Vreg, has also sounded the alarm: a fixed contract could prove costly if prices fall sharply in the coming months.
