Traditional ATMs are becoming increasingly rare in several regions of Belgium, as they are too expensive for the banks. The old ATMs are giving way to Batopin machines, a project by Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING and KBC.

In 2022, Shopping 1 in Genk received four Batopin distributors. Jan went there last Saturday to withdraw money, and not everything went as planned: “I followed the instructions on the machine. But suddenly he spat out my card. On the screen came the message that I had done nothing for more than 30 seconds, so the transaction could not be done,” he explains to HBVL.

Jan then went to the ATM next door to withdraw 200 euros. Everything went well…until he checked his bank transactions. Twice 200 euros were debited from his bank account. The Flemish expressed his problem to his KBC bank: “They were not shocked. Apparently, I was not the first to whom this happened, ”he says.

Jan shared his story on social media and others say they had the same problem with Batopin dispensers. A user told him in particular that he had received 50 euros less than requested.

Contacted by our colleagues from Het Belang Van Limburg, Batopin ensures that this type of problem is rare and affirms that Jan will be reimbursed.
