The night was eventful on the side of the Ghislenghien zoning and more particularly on the parking lot of the company GEFCO Benelux. On site, dozens of vehicles (Editor’s note: about forty, according to our information) were engulfed in flames. The firefighters, who arrived very quickly on the spot, did everything in their power to contain the fire which affected many vehicles as quickly as possible.

A thick column of black smoke, visible for miles around, testified to the seriousness of the fire which is in progress. This site notably hosts a storage area for 10,000 to 13,000 vehicles intended for sale, vehicles parked in a 45-hectare car park.

Around one o’clock in the morning, the whole situation was completely under control by the firefighters from Rebaix. At that time, the police, present on the spot, told us that they did not yet know the precise circumstances of the fire and did not know either if it was an accident or a voluntary act.

This fire occurred a few hours after a meeting between unions and management took place. As a reminder, on December 6, the Gefco Benelux management announced its intention to lay off 51 people out of the 170 workers at the Ghislenghien site. A decision which follows the will of the direction to close the workshop of mechanics and bodywork for reasons of lack of profitability.

This Thursday, a meeting was therefore held between the unions and the management of the company and things did not go as planned. The tension was such that the discussions were stopped. A new meeting should be held on January 25.
