Lhe Flemish Minister for Energy, Zuhal Demir (N-VA), will start a dialogue with his Dutch counterpart with a view to collaborating on the construction of two new nuclear reactors in the Netherlands. A win-win situation that could secure the long-term supply of the north of the country, said Saturday in a press release Ms. Demir. The Dutch minister Rob Jetten tempers the Flemish enthusiasm.

“Even if one assumes that Flanders has no competence in energy production, there is actually no obstacle to working with the Dutch government. The Flemish Energy and Climate Agency has invested more than 1.5 billion euros in renewables, renovation and heating networks in recent years. An investment in nuclear power via the Netherlands is also possible”, emphasizes the minister.

“In view of the concerns about supplies in Belgium and the Dutch government’s choice of a location close to the border (Borssele, editor’s note), we are going to start discussions on collaboration and/or participation in the nuclear project of the -Down. If we can ensure the supply of Flanders in this way, we should not hesitate”, continues Ms. Demir.

A first meeting on the file should take place at the end of January.

For his part, the Dutch minister indicated to the ANP agency that collaboration was “not excluded” but that it was still premature to talk about it. The government is in favor of two new power stations, but questions of financing, in particular, have yet to be decided.
