“Our five-day city trip turned into a 42-day survival trip”
During the attack in the borough of Manhattan, the Uzbek drove into pedestrians and cyclists driving a rental van on October 31, 2017. This left eight people dead and a dozen seriously injured. It is the deadliest attack in New York since 9/11.
Among the victims is a Belgian, Anne-Laure Decadt, 31, from Staden. She left behind two young children. She was in New York for a city trip with her mother and two sisters. Three other Belgians, a family made up of father, mother and son, were injured.
In total, Saipov, who said he carried out his attack on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, was charged with 22 counts. They include charges of murder and attempted murder. He is also on trial for membership of a terrorist organization and for destroying and damaging vehicles.
If convicted, the man faces the death penalty. This is the first federal trial to seek the death penalty since President Joe Biden took office.
On the day of the attack, Aristide took a photo of his family, riding their bicycles in the streets of the Big Apple. This shot was taken 12 seconds before Saipov charged at them. He recalls the terrible events at the Nieuwsblad.
“Our five-day city trip unexpectedly turned into a 42-day survival trip. On December 12, we were back in Belgium. The consequences are lifelong for us. My wife – who had both legs amputated – still often suffers from phantom pain. I have a headache every day, ”laments the Belgian.
Today, and with the start of the trial, Aristide hopes that justice will be done.
