Prince Laurent is “very angry” following a change that affects… his surname
You probably didn’t know it, but part of the royal family has the surname of “Belgium”. This is the case of King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, King Albert II, Queen Paola and Crown Princess Elisabeth. Philippe is officially called “Philippe (Léopold Louis Marie) of Belgium”.
Until several months ago, this was also the case for Prince Laurent and Princess Astrid. But, several newspapers reported recently, since March 2022, things have changed. The princes and princesses of Belgium had to go to their municipal administration to have their identity card changed. We now find the name of the historical family, namely “of Saxe-Coburg”.
In the columns of Het Nieuwsblad, Prince Laurent does not hide his dissatisfaction. “It was in March 2022 that we had to change our identity cards. We had no choice. Only Philippe, Mathilde and their children can still be called from Belgium”he said.
“Claire, our children and I are now called from Saxe-Coburg. And I am very angry: ‘from Saxe-Coburg is called ‘van Saksen-Coburg’. And yet: we are called von Saksen-Coburg and not van. But hey, it’s not that on our ID cards“, he continues.
Prince Laurent then gives a more concrete example: “What would you think if you were called Solis instead of Selis? My sister Astrid is now called van Habsburg (the name of her husband, Prince Lorenz) and not von Habsburg“.
