Electricity prices could explode and triple this week. This exponential increase is due to several factors. The first is the weather, with increasingly cold temperatures and a lack of sun and wind. The postponement to December 18 of the restart of the Tihange 1 nuclear reactor also plays its role, as does the massive import of electricity by France.

According to Matthias Detremmerie, broker at energy supplier Elindus, who spoke to HLN, we could find ourselves here in “the most difficult week of the year”. Sunday, we paid 433 euros per megawatt hour of electricity at peak times, between 6 and 8 p.m. This amount could skyrocket. One of the possible scenarios? A price of up to 1,500 euros per MWh…

For the specialist, the polar cold comes at the worst of times: “These temperatures, lower than those initially expected, will remain for a few more weeks, and the lack of wind does not help us. I think this situation will last more or less until the holidays. The forecasts are then better. The only way to face this increase: consume less”.
