Snowfall: motorists find themselves stuck FOR HOURS in the Cointe tunnel this Friday evening
Snow falls on part of the country this Friday, mainly in the Ardennes. Consequence: disturbances are reported on the roads. In Liège, several motorists stuck for hours in the Cointe tunnel pressed our orange Alert us button.
Rachel explains to us that she left work around 6 p.m. “We left Seraing. We were supposed to be back at 6:15 p.m., but around 8:30 p.m. we are still stuck. We advanced 200 meters in two hours“, she laments.
Rachel sent us a photo of the situation at 6 p.m.:
Around 8:15 p.m., Philippe wrote us this: “We have received no information from the police. We’re afraid to be stuck here in the car all night“. We call it shortly before 9 p.m.. “After three hours of waiting, we have just come out of it,” he says with relief. “Spending three hours in a tunnel is a bit scary all the same. “, specifies our witness.
Madison also contacted us. We call him around 9:10 p.m. She is then still in the tunnel. “It starts to roll very slowly since 10 minutes. I started at 5 p.m. and the trip takes a maximum of 40 minutes. There we are more than four hours away“, she clarifies. “So far we haven’t seen anything except ambulances passing. And lots of cars breaking down one after the other“, Concludes Madison.
These disruptions in the Cointe tunnel originated in an accident that occurred on the A602 Chênée > Loncin in Liège – Avroy-Laveu, towards Brussels. According to Inforoutes, a truck ended up in scissors and the roadway was closed. The link was closed at the Val Benoit interchange following trucks in difficulty. A detour has been set up.
In the Ardent City, the police zone asked residents not to drive. “Due to the current snowfall, driving conditions are extremely complicated on the territory of the City of Liège. Pending snow removal and road spreading (in progress), driving is not recommended.
The sloping roads are very slippery and some are inaccessible at the moment“, warns the local police.
