Tensions in Committee R: Parliament is considering an “impeachment”
Committee R staff members have reported to parliament about internal tensions in the intelligence oversight body. The House Legal Department has drafted a memorandum on possible impeachment proceedings against the triumvirate leading the Committee. Hearings are underway.

Ahen the two Belgian intelligence services – State Security and the General Intelligence and Security Service – are developing and reforming as rarely in their history, how is the body responsible for monitoring them? Committee R has been plagued by internal tensions for some time and, according to some insiders, could no longer function properly.
The Clerk of Committee R took a series of written grievances to Parliament late last year. Subsequently, the Comité R parliamentary monitoring committee organized two in camera hearings with a number of staff in January. The evening and Thing have learned from well-informed sources. The third round of consultations will take place this Wednesday and could possibly lead to formal impeachment proceedings against the Committee’s leadership. But we are not there (yet).
