The cure for heart attacks may be in the blood of glass frogs!
You may know these little amphibiansamphibians arboreal whose organs can be seen through the skin, the “glass frogs”. The transparencytransparency is a complex phenomenon known in several animals, but very rare in vertebratesvertebratesespecially terrestrial. Indeed, our blood is filled with Red cellsRed cells which obstruct the lightlight and make our body covered with blood vessels opaque.
To overcome this difficulty, the glass frogs use a camouflage stratagem which is of great interest to scientists. When they go about their business nocturnalnocturnalthey blend in with the green of the leaves without too much trouble, but when they sleep, during the day, the light of the sunsun could reveal their hiding place to their predators.
To blend into the green diffusediffuse from the leaves under which they hide, the frogs empty their blood of their red blood cells! The authors of a new study published in Science have shown that approximately 90% of these cells, which are essential for the diffusion of oxygen, leave their circuit and are stored in the liverliver. This prodigious ability, however, raises questions. In particular, scientists are trying to understand how all these globules can circulate in crowded vessels without damaging tissues or creating clotsclots blood, usually responsible for vascular problems such as heart attackheart attack. The road to medical advances is sometimes paved with strange discoveries.
