“Unacceptable arbitrary arrest” of a Cameroonian in Belgium: “I gave the doctors my medical reports, they refused to read it”

Three Brussels MPs visited him in Steenokkerzeel (Flemish Brabant) and believe that this is an unacceptable arbitrary arrest.

Lukas Waufo is a 66-year-old Cameroonian entrepreneur who travels frequently for business within the Schengen area. On a trip in October he arrived in Belgium via Brussels Airlines, but soon after suffered health problems. Several operations are carried out and one scheduled for the end of the month in Brussels. He must return from a trip to Bosnia via Zagreb to Belgium to be present at a consultation before the operation. But his visa has in the meantime been declared invalid, which he has never been notified of. He was taken handcuffed to the Caricole closed center in Steenokkerzeel for a fourteen-day detention. “At the center, I gave the doctors my medical reports, which they refused to read. They forbade me to contact my doctor outside”, denounces the sexagenarian.

Informed of the case, three Brussels deputies – Kalvin Soiresse Njall (Ecolo), Petya Obolensky (PTB) and Gladys Kazadi (Les Engagés) – decided to use their parliamentary power to go to the Caricole on 10 November. “After having collected all the necessary information and having analyzed it, we believe that this is an unacceptable arbitrary arrest”, they write to Le Soir in the process.

That day, Lukas Waufo received a favorable decision from the Aliens Litigation Council, requested in extreme urgency. Which notes that despite the necessary precautions, the state of health of the man was not considered in the decision to lock him up. State that the doctors of the OE have however themselves come to recognize as very serious, notes the Council.
