How to explain such losses? “Pension savings funds take the form of collective investment schemes and are subject to the performance of the financial markets”, explains the press service of Febelfin, the financial sector federation, to our colleagues. In the case of Margot and her husband, it is a defensive type, that is to say the one who ensures the least risk in terms of the return on their investments. There are also neutral or dynamic funds.

If the savings of Margot and her husband have been severely affected, it is therefore due to the high volatility of the financial markets in recent months, due in particular to inflation. “In response to high inflation, central bankers regularly raise interest rates, which however has a negative effect on economic growth and the valuation of bonds and equities,” says Febelfin. If equities and bonds fall, this leads to a drop in funds, which explains the loss of the couple, which nevertheless remains very high compared to other Belgians at the end of their careers.
