We explain to you this extremely rare pathology from which the singer suffers, who canceled part of her tour scheduled for 2023.

She took everyone by surprise this Thursday morning with a disturbing announcement. Celine Dion explained via her Instagram account that she was suffering from a “very rare neurological disease”, forcing her to once again postpone the concerts of her Courage World Tour in Europe. The Canadian singer is normally expected in our country in September.

The visibly emotional 54-year-old singer explains in the video message that she has been battling health issues for a long time. She explains that she was recently diagnosed with “stiff man syndrome”, a rare disease in which the muscles become stiff. Because of this disease, the star “cannot use her vocal cords” as she would like. “I am very sad to have to announce to you today that I will not be ready to resume my European tour in February,” she said again.

“It’s hard to breathe, it’s hard to sing”

“Stiff man” syndrome has unclear causes and is characterized by progressive stiffness. This stiffness mainly affects the trunk muscles and is superimposed on spasms, resulting in postural deformities. Chronic pain, reduced mobility and lumbar hyperlordosis are common symptoms. Extremely rare, it occurs in about one person in a million and is most often found in middle-aged people.

Benzodiazepines are the most common symptomatic treatment. Other common treatments include baclofen, intravenous immunoglobin, and rituximab. There is limited but encouraging therapeutic experience with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

In a biography devoted to the singer, her ENT Jean Abitbol had already formulated this recurring problem with the singer: “ You feel a lump in your throat as well as sorts of spasms that usually occur when you have experienced a period of relatively aggressive stress. “It is difficult to breathe, it is difficult to sing, it is difficult to speak…”, he added again.
