Whether or not to mark Camargue bulls with a hot iron, the debate rages between animalists and breeders
It all started with a national forum, signed by 50 elected ecologists and animalists, who denounced the mistreatment that, according to them, we do to Camargue bulls. Since then, the cloth has been burning with local breeders. “We want regulations to be put in place to prohibit abuse and torture to which bulls are subjected while alive on farms. Like the ferrade, the branding with a hot iron or even the escoussure, the cutting of the ear”, argues Eddine Ariztegui, elected animalist from Montpellier (Hérault). With Coralie Mantion, vice-president of the Metropolis, he is at the origin of the fire that set fire to the meadows.
“Of course we anesthetize the bulls to sterilize them. Otherwise it would be impossible to do. You absolutely do not know our universe and our culture, and you come to give us lessons! exclaims Corentin Carpentier, spokesperson for young breeders in Provence and Languedoc.
Demonstration on February 11
“You see, the real ecologists are the manadiers (herd owners)because thanks to their extensive breeding, the last in Europe, they maintain the meadows, the territories. You are junk environmentalists, ”adds Patrick Vignal, the deputy (Renaissance) of the most beefy constituency in France, who describes populations and elected officials ulcerated by a platform “which takes us for fools”.
Since then, as when it comes to saving bullfighting, the bouvine people have been moving, with a demonstration scheduled for February 11 in Montpellier. For their part, the signatories of the forum are launching a petition on the Senate website for the legislator to take up the subject. And they intend to derail the project of classification at Unesco of bullfighting cultures. To avoid the burn of the ferrade and ensure the marking of wild bulls, the animalist association Alliance Ethical even offers color marking by spraying paint on the bulls.
