Why did George Clooney give 20,000 euros to a village in the Var?

People and royalty

Last Saturday, the mayor of Val (Var) thanked American actor George Clooney for his generous donation, which until then had remained anonymous.

According to a Paris Match France article by Leah Bitton

The donor could have remained completely anonymous, but the mayor of Le Val decided otherwise. Wishing a happy new year to the inhabitants of his Var commune, Saturday January 14, Jérémy Giuliano wanted to thank a generous donor who had, in the fall of 2021, financed part of the reconstruction of his charming village.

“The day after the floods, we received a message indicating that George Clooney wanted to contact us. Which resulted in a donation of 20,000 euros”he said according to Be Morning.

As explained France 3 at the time, “three housing estates [avaient] been flooded”. The water had risen up to 1.7 meters in some houses and the mud had “damaged everything” in its path, affecting “eighty disaster victims”. If the American actor was particularly sensitive to this cause, it is because he acquired a property in Brignoles, a town neighboring Le Val, in 2021.
